Our planet is warming; it's significantly warmer in the 21st century than it was in the last third of the 20th century. Indeed, four of the warmest years on record have occurred in this century. This global warming is being forced by the unabated burning of fossil fuels pouring CO2 into the atmosphere ... And this warming appears to be forcing dramatic regional and worldwide climate shifts. This series takes you through the Science of Global Warming and the Solutions. We need only to trust the science and work together to implement these solutions... solutions we can no longer afford to ignore.
Shot in Hi-Definition this series is presented and narrated by Erick Avari.
- Disk 1-The Science of Global Warming
Running Time: 58 minutes
Program One: The Science of Global Warming We cannot predict the consequences of Global Warming without clearly understanding the “how” and “why” Global Warming is occurring. This program takes you through the complexities and science of our atmosphere, the numerous biogeochemical cycles occurring today, and the physics behind the greenhouse effect.
Chapters in this program:
-The Science of Global Warming
-Climate has Changed Before
-The Industrial Revolution
-Hydrological Cycle
-Biogeochemical Cycles
-Nitrogen Cycle
-Methane Cycle
-Aerosol Cycle
-The Carbon Cycle
-The Greenhouse Effect
-Greenhouse Gas Demonstration
-How Much Warmer Are We
- Disk 2-Global Warming: Solutions
Running Time: 58 minutes
This program looks at new solutions that change our energy sources away from fossil fuels. In ten years we an be free of our dependence on fossil fuels and at the same time reverse Global Warming. All of the solutions are dependant on the choices we make now. Will the solutions be implemented in an intelligent and planned way or be forced on us in a costly and painful way by circumstances? Look around, the future is now.
Industrialization has reshaped the surface of the planet … Replacing native ecosystems with agricultural crops … Manipulating water flows through dams and reservoirs … Urbanizing large seacoast areas … Destroying food chains in the oceans … And spewing vast amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere through the burning of fossil fuels — coal, oil and natural gas. And with some of these greenhouse gases having over 1000 year life spans in the atmosphere, the cumulative effect, if continued, will end civilization as we know it.
Chapters in this program:
-Global Warming: Solutions
-Adaptation and Mitigation for a Warmer World
-Mitigation
-Wind Power
-Hydrogen Fuel
-Photo Biological Hydrogen
-Ethanol
-Thermal Chemical
-Conversion of Biomass
-Solar Adaptation
Clip Length: 4 minutes 17 seconds
Reviews:
"This program explains the causes of global warming, its effects, and solutions to reverse the trend. Clearly narrated by actor Erick Avari, the film traces humanity's ecological impact throughout history, focusing primarily on the modern age. Scientists champion different solutions to resolve the problem, including solar power, wind power, ethanol, and hydrogen fuel cells to cut the carbon emissions of today's fossil fuels-but all agree that action must be taken. Current and archival film footage and animated graphs support the concepts presented. Computer animations illustrate the complex concepts of the hydrological, carbon, nitrate, and aerosol cycles, which explain how various pollutants contaminate the ecosystem... this informative program does an excellent job of supporting its position."

- School Library Journal March 2007"Hosted and narrated by Erick Avari, Global Warming: Science and Solutions is a two- disc set that presents an up-to-date look at an urgent problem, arguing that as global warming continues, arctic ice caps will recede, sea levels will rise, coastal areas will be wiped out, and precipitation levels and ecosystems will change, leading to more frequent and more violent storms in some areas, arid conditions in others, the extinction of some species, and a drastic change in our way of life. Disc one studies the science of global warming, describing how the industrialization of America and other countries over 200 years ago led to the burning of fossil fuels, which created the "greenhouse effect" by trapping gases and warming the atmosphere. The program notes that America leads the way in burning oil -- over 500 million barrels of oil are consumed every day in our auto-driven society -- and that, unfortunately, rather than serve as an example to developing countries, our leaders seem all too willing to hide behind the fog of 'constructed uncertainty.' Disc two looks for solutions to global warming, calling for a new Manhattan Project that would bring together the best minds in the science and business communities to work on this urgent problem, while also reminding viewers that little will be accomplished unless individuals make adjustments in their personal lifestyles. DVD extras include an educator's guide, timelines and graphs, and Spanish subtitles. Recommended."
- Video Librarian, May/June 2007"This set of DVDs could help your students make sense of global warming so you can effectively engage them in an educated dialogue of the issue."
